Landfill Restrictions

The following items are not permitted in the landfill:

  • Used oil
  • Lead acid batteries
  • Solvents and paint thinners
  • Paint, unless it has dried to a solid form. We can accept up to 5 gallons of normal household paint diring each visit to the landfill. Leave the lids open or pour out the paint on plastic to dry. We cannot accept large quantities from commercial painters or contractors
  • Antifreeze
  • Acids or chemicals. We may accept barrels if there is no more than one inch of liquid in the bottom
  • Refrigeration units, unless they are certified Freon free. Jadeco is currently certified to remove Freon from these units and charges a fee of $26.00 to do so. A receipt verifying the removal of Freon is required at the landfill prior to accepting any refrigeration units. Individuals bringing these units to the landfill without a receipt will be turned away. The Town will remove the doors from these units for safety sake.
  • Sewage waste (only grit from Sewer Plant or sump waste from car washes or wash bays)
  • Friable asbestos (insulation, etc.). We can accept non-friable asbestos (floor tile, etc).
  • Petroleum contaminated soils or materials

We realize that it is impossible to monitor and control what is placed in the canisters that are dumped by the city garbage trucks. Periodically, some of the above items are placed in the canisters. Contents of the canisters are not sorted at the landfill so consequently many of these things are accepted and buried without our knowledge. We encourage individuals to follow the established guidelines for landfill dumping.

Should you have any questions regarding any of these items, please contact Town Hall at 864-3838.
